One Thing: What Women Really Want
Luke 10: The story of 2 sisters, Martha and Mary
Sisters can share an intimate level of love and trust, but at the same time share the equal level of misunderstanding, raw emotions and hurt.
Now I don't have a sister, but I do have a best friend and we might as well be sisters - so I can kind of put into perspective what this relationship with Mary and Martha was like.
Martha is a DOER
1) She's consumed with domestic duties (things that had to be done then and there in this story)
-men sometimes ask, "Why can't my wife just sit down and let things go?" Trust me, the woman doesn't want to be doing all those duties, in fact it would be nice if she got some help - but the truth is, there is always something that needs to be done.
2) She's irritated about everything
-She was feeling like there was a problem - but most of the time the problem we're dealing with is not the problem, it's the way you feel about the problem that really becomes the problem. (confusing, but true)
Jesus is the main character/hero in this story. He understood that there were more things going on then what met the eye.
-The real issue with Martha is probably not the fact that she's in the kitchen cooking while her sister is in the other room kneeling at Jesus' feet. There are more things going on in her heart. She would have given anything to be in that room sitting at the feet of Jesus, but the work had to be done.
-And in this passage, Jesus responds to Martha with tenderness (Luke 10:41) Martha doubts whether or not the Lord cares, she wonders if anyone notices her sacrifices. The truth is, He does notice. Because of the way He approaches the problem.
Martha wants somebody to understand - to tell her that she's special. Here's the deal, ONE word from your man means the world b/c he is the only man that can affirm you in such a way that makes you feel like nothing else matters (except ladies have to remember that the only man who is perfect and will never let you down is Jesus)
4)Martha was frustrated with feelings of isolation
-Women tend to feel like the world is against them, especially when they are exhausted. But you have to remember that when you're feeling like that, you're not alone - Jesus is always right there with you, He never leaves.
Now on to Mary - While Martha is breaking a sweat, Mary is breaking the rules
1) She chose the lowest place in the room
2) She chose delight over duty
3) She chose treasure over task
Main thing is it's okay to chose delight over duty at times, and to Mary - Jesus was at their house for this one moment and the dishes would always be there.
John 12:8 "You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."
Take it all for what it's worth, those were just a few of my random notes for week 4. I'm excited to hear what Perry has to say for this last weekend (Week 5-Caught) - because he's been gone for the last 2 weeks of this series.
